Biographies of the New Faculty Dean and Vice-Dean

Following election earlier in the year, Dr Barry Miller became the new Dean and Dr John Hughes became the new Vice-Dean at the Board meeting on 16th September 2016.  Find out some more about them in these two short biographies.

Dr Barry Miller, Dean

Barry is a Consultant in Pain Medicine & Anaesthesia at the Royal Bolton Hospital where he was appointed in 2000 after undergoing his training in the North West of England.  His interests include Palliative Pain Medicine, Education and Ethics. 

Barry was on the founding committee for Training and Assessment for the newly created FPM, Regional Advisor, Chair of the RAPMs, Chair of the Training committee and Vice-Dean for the FPM.

Outside the Faculty, Barry has been Chair of the Hospital Medical Staff Committee, Chair of the local BMA, Expert member of the Regional Ethics Committee and a Peer-reviewer for the BJA.

Dr John Hughes, Vice-Dean

John is a Pain Consultant in Middlesbrough since 1995, with an interest in abdominal and pelvic pain, education and equitable access to quality pain management services.  John trained at St Thomas’s Hospital London, the North East of England and spent a year in Baltimore USA.

John’s recent activities include being Chair of the Clinical Reference Group for Specialised Pain Services for NHSE providing an advisory role to NHSE on specifications, policies, governance and pain related matters relating to service delivery.  Member of the European Association of Urology Pelvic Pain Working group that updates it guidance on an annual basis, member of IASP Educational Initiatives Working Group, FPM fellowship and CPD assessor.

John’s previous activities have included being Chair of the BPS map of medicine chronic pelvic working group, Chair IASP Abdominal Pelvic Pain SIG including development of 1st World Congress, RAPM and chair RAPM for FPM.
