Trainee Essay Prize

The Faculty of Pain Medicine will award a prize for the best essay on the subject of:  “The History of Pain Medicine” in celebration of the Faculty’s 10 year anniversary.

The topic of the essay may be chosen by trainee, on any aspect of the history of acute or chronic pain management and treatment. The competition is open to all trainee members of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

The essay should be 1500 - 2000 words in length, submitted in word format, double-spaced, with references in the Vancouver format.

The winner will receive a £250 cash prize and the essay will be considered for publication in the FPM Transmitter magazine.

Essays will be marked by members of the FPM Board and/or Training and Assessment Committee. Marking will be judged according to criteria similar to those used for the case reports, under headings of:

  • Defining the subject
  • Relevant/succinct historical synopsis
  • Important features researched and discussed
  • Relevant and up-to-date information
  • Drawing conclusions
  • Professional writing

Announcement of winner: Friday 25th August 2017
