Case of the Month #38: Chronic pelvic pain by Dr Kerry Bosworth

Published: 02/05/2024

Overview

Mr D was referred to the pain clinic by the urology team. He was a 53 year old gentleman who had originally been referred by his GP with a six month history of dysuria, urinary frequency, pelvic pain and sexual dysfunction. He had had three courses of antibiotics before the urology referral.

Assessment by the urology team, including a cystoscopy, was unremarkable and he had no benefit from treatment with paracetamol, NSAIDs, codeine, amitriptyline, gabapentin, pregabalin, duloxetine, doxazosin or tamsulosin. They diagnosed him with chronic prostatitis.

Before continuing, consider the following questions:

  • Is there any other information you would like to know?
  • What are the potential differential diagnoses?
  • Are there investigations that would be helpful?
